An Interview with Meredith Brough, Baby/Toddler Sleep Expert

How long have you been doing what you do, and how did you become a Sleep Coach? 

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment, and a resulting “compelling story,” that brought me to where I am today – coaching people like you on exactly what to do to find yourself fully rested with predictable sleep patterns in place, and fully enjoying your experience as a mother. That defining moment in my life happened in June 2017.

It was summer, and I was spending time with my children. I received an emergency call from a someone at church, who asked if I could take care of 2-month-old twins and two other children, 8 and 10 years old. The “older” kids were trying to care for these infants while their mother was moving out of her apartment. Right in the middle of this chaos, her boyfriend started a huge fight and walked out on her and the children leaving them all alone.

This sweet woman was absolutely broken. My 14-year-old daughter and I quickly arrived at her home, and after some time, she asked to speak to me privately in the bedroom. In between hysterical sobs, she confided that she just couldn’t do this by herself. She had no idea how she was going to make it with these 4 kids, feeling overwhelmed and in poor health. My heart broke for her, and I knew what I had to do. I looked at her and said, "I will do everything I can to help you make it.” As a mom of 5 children of my own, I knew immediately this exhaustion and overwhelm too well. She had the signs of postpartum depression, and God had sent me there for a reason, which I later realized was my life’s purpose and why I was put on this earth.

We immediately got to work. She needed several items, so we set out to run errands. Unfortunately, on our travels, she lost her keys. At her lowest point, I decided she was coming to stay with my family, over-night. We kept the twins there for a few days after the others returned home. I observed that the twins were sleeping very little, taking only 10-minute naps and barely eating. She didn’t know how to be a mom of twins and 2 other kids, but she was trying her best. Within 4 days of meeting them, I had the twins sleeping 8 hours at night. The babies were settling into a routine, taking long naps, and thriving!  They were more manageable for their mom. My friend cried tears of happiness and believed everything was going to be okay.

After the babies returned home and I witnessed my friend’s relief and joy, I had an epiphany! My gift was life-changing and deeply meaningful. Almost at once, my thoughts turned to my dear friend who had passed away the month before from bone cancer.  I realized that I had found a way to honor her legacy. In my heart, I had promised her that I would carry on her work offering love and service to others. In 32 short years, she had impacted thousands of lives as a therapist, professor, and author. I am now convinced that my friend had a hand in sending that family to me. It was no coincidence that I found the answer to that promise, so soon after she was gone.

Who would have ever guessed that 15 years of serving others in this realm would result in a life’s mission?  I developed my abilities during the first 9 years of motherhood, beginning with my firstborn’s long first year. It seemed that he was determined to make sleep a battle. With my second child, I researched infant sleep books and found effective techniques while she was very small. She and my next 3 children slept for 10-12 hours through the night by 2 months old. Motherhood was a fulfilling, joyful experience for me because of my peacefully sleeping babies. This was something I could not keep to myself. As I tended babies and small children from the ages of 4 weeks to 6 years old in my day-care, miracles happened. During the first 1-3 weeks of day-time care in my home, newborns, babies, toddlers, and sets of twins slept for 8-12 hours at night.  These families enjoyed restful nights and happy, healthy children.

My friend who passed away was one of the parents that I served. I started working on my promise to her by figuring out how to teach mothers what to do to create great sleep habits, since I knew it intuitively. As I developed my program, the women I served became energized versions of themselves that took delight in motherhood. Knowing their babies were thriving from healthy sleep patterns brought them peace. I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping mothers feel rested, confident, joyful and peaceful.

Since then, I’ve worked with many private clients, spoken in front of many groups; lived my dream of being an inspiring female entrepreneur, and I have created the Successful Sleep™ System. This is a series of 12 steps to restore joy to motherhood by unlocking your baby’s sleep potential, every mom needs to apply to become a thriving, peaceful, rejuvenated mother.

What makes you different from other sleep coaches?

My background as a childcare expert and seasoned mother of five reflects a completely unique approach to sleep coaching. My methods and principles come from 30 years of experience caring for children. I know babies’ behavior inside and out, so I will be able to predict your child’s reactions and behavior. I have developed a program that works to create new sleep habits and phase out the old.  Instead of an emphasis on “self-soothing” or crying methods, you will build security, meet your baby’s needs, offer comfort, promote healthy sleep, and develop new skills. You will have access to my 6 signature methods that gently teach your baby HOW to fall asleep, feeling comfort and security and empower them to sleep independently. I am proud to have earned the nicknames “Baby Whisperer” and “Momma Whisperer” from my clients, friends, and family. I am spiritual, happy, confident, compassionate, and trustworthy.  We will be a powerful team!

What kind of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

The Successful Sleep™ System workshops and programs were created for women who are absolutely excited and serious about teaching their baby to sleep all night, nap well, follow a routine, and fall asleep without help.  You must want to be happier, well-rested, confident, and at peace as a mother. This means not running around all day long, beating yourself up saying “I am a failure. Why can’t I get him to sleep all night?” or “I did this to my baby.  It’s all my fault!”  The workshops and programs were created for you to put systems into place which will eventually lead your child to sleep like a champion, be more secure, independent, and predictable. You will also become joyful, sleep well, and find serenity and fulfillment in your role.

Being a mother myself, I work really well with other moms who are committed to their success no matter what, who are ready to get to work and want to know exactly what steps to take to feel energetic, joyful, fulfilled and at peace as a mother of a baby, toddler or young child. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses anymore, just a new way of thinking and full support while you achieve these incredibly exciting goals: being fully rested because your child sleeps all night, confident and fulfilled because your child is predictable and follows a routine easily, naps well, and falls asleep with little to no help! Lastly, finding peace and happiness because you and your child are thriving!

For what type of women is your program NOT going to work?

Please know that I’m very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for my program and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up for. (It wouldn’t be fair to them.). The Successful Sleep™ program is NOT for those who have no money coming in and are absolutely, financially desperate, at least not right away. It’s been my experience that people in financial crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they spend so much time worrying about where they are going to get next months’ rent check or mortgage payment.). If you fall within this category, it’s absolutely OK. We’ve all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another. Do yourself (3) favors.

1. Get some money coming in with a full-time or part-time job at the very least, and then call me. This will take the edge off and provide a little more peace of mind.  Mostly, it will de-clutter your mind enough to focus on your Successful Sleep™ program assignments and the BIG picture.  

2. Sign up for the free Sweet Slumber™ weekly email "Hope and Help for the Weekend" on the Community tab. The free information will get you started towards your goals until you’re ready to work with me one-on-one.

3. Make a point to learn the tips on my Facebook and Instagram accounts under @sweetslumbertime and through my Successful Sleep™ Facebook Group. The tips are posted weekly and will give you LOTS to think about.

Doing these three things will really help you get primed for our work. When you're ready, call me, and we'll get started. (I'm in no rush and will be here when you need me.) Other types of personalities I won't work with (without exception) are the whiner or the chronic skeptic, as well as individuals who consistently make excuses for not getting their assignments done or challenging and doubting every aspect of the program. If you are one of these people, I gently and respectfully ask that you not call, and I hope you understand why. We'll probably just not work well together, and I wouldn't want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair? It is important that my clients trust me and the process, don't question it or fall behind in what is required. We are building a relationship, and it is imperative that we establish it in a positive manner using a foundation of compatibility.

Knowing which essential tools to use, and how and when to use them will be the vital keys to your child’s sleep potential! Applying compassionate but effective methods every step of the way will bring you peace of mind and results. Here’s what the System empowers you to do:

1. Discover Clarity and Confidence

You will learn to trust your instincts, feel qualified and strong in your role as a mother (or father). You will transform the thoughts that create roadblocks and take away your energy. You will gain the power to commit, be consistent, visualize your goals, and trust. You will learn how to make space for your baby to adopt these new skills and abilities. Studies show that meeting your baby’s needs builds security. The more you help your child feel cared for, trustful, and content, the more security your child will develop. You will learn how to balance these needs while promoting healthy independence, attachment, and establishing a feeling of safety and peace when you are away or across the room. You will teach your child new skills through gentle methods that continually build this security and attachment 

4. Develop Smooth Routines

Most likely, you have experienced what you don’t want to happen at bedtime! You will implement key elements that create a peaceful experience as you prepare your child to fall asleep. You will choose the most effective tools and activities that fit into your favorite bedtime/naptime routines. You will plan the right length of time for your routine, identify when to start and how to act.  

5. Rely on Nature

You will feel resourceful as you draw from nature to improve your child’s sleep! These organic factors are the basis of the entire program. You’ll soak up information about your little one’s development, hormone production/release, rhythms, metabolism, regulation, and several other valuable facts that you will want to take advantage of! As you progress through the program, you will discover holistic remedies and solutions pertaining to your baby’s health and wellness, too.

6. Heighten Your Awareness

Could there be anything more helpful than being attuned to your child’s needs, cues, and forms of communication?  This is a skill that fine-tunes mother's (or father's) intuition, brings relief and results. You will learn what your child's non-verbal cues mean, recognize details you never noticed, feel more in tune to your baby, and respond to his/her needs better than ever.  You will feel empowered!

7. Implement a Predictable Schedule

Babies thrive on the consistency, structure, and peace that a schedule brings into home-life. Your child will respond well to predictability and regulate his/her needs according to the plan you follow. You will gain the skills to follow a schedule with some flexibility, as well.  You will understand how to start the schedule one step at a time and feel informed regarding what to expect. You will both experience a sense of security and serenity as a result of your schedule's success.

8. Solidify Naps

One of the essential elements of your child's wellness is high-quality naps. Sleep truly begets sleep! You will know the necessary length of a nap for your child, target the right times for your child to sleep (now and in the future), and help your child take longer naps. You will master the juggling act of balancing awake-time and nap-time for the benefit of your little one's health, well-being, and prevent night sleep interruptions.

9. Create Independence

Children who know how to fall asleep by themselves have a better handle on going back to sleep when they change sleep cycles at night and during their naps. Learning this skill will come smoothly as you follow a step by step, customized, gentle method, unique to my program. The process will bring peace, progress, and security to both of you. You can imagine what it will be like to watch your child calmly relax into a deep sleep while you look on from the video monitor or across the room. Your heart will swell with pride and an overwhelming feeling of love for your child. Relief will follow when another caregiver is able to put your little one to sleep, too!

10. Master Night-Time Sleep

Here is the principal focus of all of your work! Your child’s sleep will improve naturally from week to week as you apply all of the steps of the program, and you will see progressively longer stretches. You will wean your baby or toddler from night feedings at the appropriate time, using gradual methods, and continue to meet his/her needs. Your child will develop a strong skill set of healthy sleep habits without regretful, painful memories or repeated sessions of crying methods. You will learn to trust your instincts, gain more confidence, build stronger bonds between you and your child, and provide your little one with progress and growth in the healthiest way! 11. Stay on Track

Since you can’t freeze time and keep your child exactly the same at the end of this program, I will teach you how to make these new sleep patterns permanent ones.  You will rely on important guidelines and rules that help you respond to your child’s needs when there are bumps in the road, such as mental leaps, growth spurts, sickness, and teething. You’ll handle typical challenges that come your way with confidence while securing good habits in their place.

How quickly can I expect results?

That depends on how quickly you can make those inner shifts and how well your child responds to your guidance. Some babies are easy to teach, and they progress in a very short time frame, sometimes even a couple weeks, while others have a bit more work to do and require more patience. Your child’s personality and level of sensitivity will influence the timing of results. We will explore this in the beginning, to give you an idea of what to expect. The timing also depends on your effort in following the program as it is outlined, how much time you devote to making changes, and the amount of trust and openness you pour into the process.

How can I guarantee myself that I will get more sleep, confidence and feel happier, in record time?

Do all of your homework. Be totally committed to your success. Understand that this is a process, a proven one, that works if you take action and implement all of the steps. My clients who have diligently applied every step of Successful Sleep™ system have successfully taught their children to sleep well and supplied rest for themselves, in much less time than they would have on their own, AND they have more confidence, peace, and happiness.
